Dr Adelbert Scholtz - Counselling Psychologist My Therapeutic Approach

In my practice, I combine my expertise as christian psychologist and pastor. I retired at age 55 honourably as pastor to start a new career as counselling psychologist, psychotherapist and pastoral counsellor. I have many years' experience in the ministry and as psychotherapist.

My training in psychology, pastoral family therapy, labour relations, biblical theology and philosophy equipped me with the skills to deal with most human problems, be they psychological, emotional, occupational, relational or spiritual in nature.

Accordingly, my approach is holistic. In my practice, I deal with all the dimensions of human existence: psychological and emotional functioning, human/social relationships, spiritual and religious problems, occupational functioning, physical health and ethical issues.

My Experience

My experience includes the following:

  • Crisis counselling (bereavement, trauma and life transitions)
  • Pastoral counselling from a Christian and Biblical perspective (spiritual, religious and ethical problems)
  • Family & couples therapy (relationship difficulties and reconstructing families with problems)
  • Phobias (including agoraphobia and social phobia)
  • Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa)
  • Forensic psychology (custody disputes, delictual claims and providing expert evidence for mitigation of sentence)
  • Depression and anxiety disorders (including bipolar disorder)
  • Pain Management
  • Substance abuse/addictions (alcohol & drug dependency; pathological gambling and stealing)
  • Learning problems in children (ADD & ADHD)
  • Mediation (resolving custody and maintenance disputes without legal processes)
  • Psychometric testing (with computer-based instruments)
  • Career counselling (advising school leavers and retrenched persons on a career choice)
  • Industrial psychology (productivity management, labour relations & selection of personnel)

Since 2005 I am a part-time lecturer in the Department of Practical Theology of the University of the Free State and I am responsible for a telematic course in pastoral care and counselling. I serve in a similar position in the Department of Theology and Religion of the University of the Western Cape since 2011.

My Qualifications

My qualifications are as follows:

  • Ph.D. (Psychology) - Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (now: North Western University)
  • D.Th. (History of Christianity) - Stellenbosch University
  • M.Th. (New Testament Studies) - Stellenbosch University
  • M.Div. (Pastoral Family Therapy) - University of Pretoria
  • Phil.Drs. (Philosophy) - Imperial University of Leyden, Netherlands
  • Higher Certificate (Labour Relations) - Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education
